The idea of finding your Edge in life has its origins in Yoga. The Sanskrit meaning for Yoga is ‘union,’ reaching beyond limits to discover what is possible. It is the balance of Yin and Yang.

Finding your Edge requires that you question your limits and grow. You find ease and balance by challenging yourself mentally and physically.

Without this exploration, both within and without, you will always wonder how far you could have gone, question how high could you reach.

For example, in the physical body, Kripalu Yoga defines it this way: “The Edge is that precise place in a posture where the body finds its optimal stretch and the mind is fully present.”

Strain and tension can result from stretching the body too far or pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. In a similar way, If you give up too soon and turn back from a goal, you will “breed physical dullness and mental boredom,” just as in a yoga posture.

Here’s how to find your Edge:

  • At times you may feel lost and uncertain.

It can be painful to know we have lost our way. Roman philosopher, Seneca, says: “The road is both safe and pleasant and is one for which you have been equipped by nature.” It beacons us. As we approach it, motivation propels us forward. The decision to change is the hardest part.

  • Every day, do something new and different.

Change your routine. Take it easy. A simple shift in perception can help you find your edge. Embrace the feeling of restlessness rather than resisting it. Examine and fully experience your feelings of dissatisfaction. This is the beginning of something new.

  • Get rid of small and annoying distractions.

The ability to focus works as a magnifying glass and strengthens self-discipline. This is a skill you can teach yourself. Give yourself the gift of doing what you love by getting into the flow, free from multi-tasking.

  • Don’t be afraid of what is hard to do.

The ancient stoic, Epictetus, teaches that the obstacle is the way. There is no false drama. Your Edge is that place where you excel…
