I crossed the line. It might as well have been the fiery abyss crossed by Indiana Jones when he was being chased and there was nowhere left to go but forward, even though it didn’t appear possible to reach the other side. Yet, each time he took a giant step forward, a platform appeared under his feet.

It was like that with communication in a close relationship for me. I had learned a pattern from my parents of tiptoing around the big issues, but that only goes so far.

When I learned about the power of being honest with myself, my communication was no longer about changing another person or getting some satisfying response.

So the day I crossed the line and chose to live truthfully, I was in a room where the conversation was negative, centered around worry and fear, lack and limitation. I felt an actual trauma response that was not healthy and I chose to get the heck out of there and swiftly.

It felt good. It was liberating and empowering and it wasn’t even about the other person. I took 100% responsibility for my life.

I didn’t need to be heard, understood, or valued. What I needed was to be honest in the way I lived my life. This included my self-expression on every level in the choices I made from the moment I got up in the…
