Seek The Kingdom Within, Then Watch What Happens

I found myself struggling to stop thinking of a conversation I had where I thought I said something stupid. I was being hard on myself and my self-esteem was taking a hit.

Then I remembered the skill that I am in the process of fine tuning: I get off the subject. I don’t just stop thinking about it, that’s too hard, but it starts with awareness.

I catch myself thinking.

This is where I change the subject, like noticing my environment. I fasten my attention onto something of my choice that I enjoy. If I’m driving I can amuse myself with anything I notice out the window. In L.A. there is always something interesting. If I’m walking, I can express love for nature, touch the bushes, smell the flowers, or just enjoy the sound of my sneakers on the gravel path.

If you are wrestling with your mind about something, just get off the subject.

This is why:

The angst disappears, the self-disapproval vanishes, the worries leave. A new perspective emerges, and your mind relaxes. It’s so refreshing you will want to practice and build this skill.

It is just like meditation, only you’re practicing while you’re going about your life and noticing that you’re thinking. You are…
