Our brain is wired for negative thinking. Our early ancestors’ goals were to detect danger and focus on survival. It is called in psychology ‘Negativity Bias,’ and served us well in a primitive era, but in our contemporary lives it prevents us from seeing the bigger picture. Today, we learn our brains have neuroplasticity. Our habits are strong enough to resist pressure to change, yet pliable enough to change if we persist and we don’t give up.
Awareness is your very best friend. It gets you to notice things you might have been doing on automatic, like the inner dialogue you have in your head — that continuous voice that has an opinion about everything good or bad, and most of the time it is negative. Neuroscientists are studying self-talk for everything from depression to weight loss, encouraging people to use gentler, kinder and more neutral language as they evaluate their bodies or their life circumstances.
