I was 16 when my dad walked up to me in the kitchen and handed me a book. He said, “It will change your life.”

I read every word and reread it many times. Decades later, it is one of the handful of books I keep, which is a lot, living on a sailboat.

The book was The Power Of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale.

Looking back, I considered myself a positive thinker as an adolescent. My childhood was a quiet household where faith was a natural part of the environment.

It was expected after a cold harsh winter that the sun would come out in spring. It was expected that if I rode my bike to the edge of town (a common practice in those days for a 9-year-old) I would find a horse to ride, and I did. Horses became a part of my life forever. It was what I expected.

Still, as I began the practice of awareness, negative thoughts needed weeding, certain to sprout up with lack of attention as in any garden.

Neuroscience explains how the brain’s plasticity allows us to build new neural pathways. The research and studies back up the power of positive thinking — that inner dialogue we call self-talk.
