At 67, I started on a surprising journey, redefining what was possible when I turned 75. Instead of giving up on my dreams, I did a 180 and chose to soar above the clouds.
I was surprised when, at 67, I got hired as a Flight Attendant for a major airline. Well-meaning people told me I’d better stick with it because it would be my last chance. All I ever wanted to do from the time I was 13 was to be an Airline Stewardess. I would lie on the grass in my backyard in Wisconsin and gaze dreamily as a plane would fly high above and disappear into the clouds.
To my regret, I did not stick with it. Leaving was inconsistent and undisciplined, but I hadn’t learned some valuable lessons yet. That would come later.
But my journey in the skies was far from over. There is a saying in the airline industry, “Once a flight attendant, always a flight attendant.”
Once again, at 75, I was hired as a flight attendant, this time with a different airline. Once again, I didn’t stick with it.
It was a significant moment of self-discovery. I no longer felt I had something to prove at this stage of life; I loved my married life with Jim…
