Quitting smoking was my awakening

Everything changed after that

When I first learned of the breathtaking power of something called an Internal Locus of Control, it wasn’t in one of my many psychology classes. It was when I quit smoking cigarettes.

I started smoking as a teenager growing up in the sixties when smoking wasn’t yet deemed harmful. It was even considered glamorous if you held the cigarette between your fingers in a certain way, lowered your eyelids seductively when a man looking like Humphrey Bogart lit the thing. Smoking, the ads showed, made you feel like a starlet up on the screen. I had my first cigarette, a Newport Light Menthol, with my best friend. That one puff insidiously drew me into addiction, slowly developing over time until one day in my mid-thirties I was a heavy smoker. By this time cigarettes were health destroying, highly expensive and offensive to others.

I wanted to quit, even promised myself I would treat my body like a shrine if I ever did quit. I pictured myself running in slow motion along a beach, filling my lungs with positive ions of healthy oxygen. I called it my Gucci Body, gave myself an upgrade to how I viewed myself, precious, worthy of the best health.
